“The experienced tutors are inspirational.”

AHMED HASSAN ABDURAH, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING HNC

HNC Mechanical Engineering student Ahmed Hassan Abdurah is glad to have industry-specific qualifications right on his doorstep.

He was recommended his IoT course by Nelson and Colne College Group, he said: “It was great to know you don’t need to go to a big university in Manchester or London. I live with my mum and look after her at the same time, so having the opportunity to study so close to home is a better option for me. It is also cheaper than commuting to or living in a big city.”

Initially, Ahmed chose engineering based on the opportunities a career in this field would present.

“I came to the UK first as a refugee and I saw engineering as an area to develop my skills and grow a career.”

The course is supporting Ahmed in improving his maths, English, and his knowledge of health and safety processes, management and manufacturing, too.

Ahmed is studying alongside his friend, Peter. The class covers computer-aided design (CAD) using industry-leading software, such as Creo, with the support of expert tutors.

“The tutors are all well experienced and knowledgeable, and I’ve found them to be inspirational,” he said. “ I admire the skills they possess and working in small class sizes means we can get one-to-one support.

“Being able to sit and talk with the tutor is great. The small class sizes really help with this.”

Ahmed hopes to continue his studies with the IoT and then source a job with a local business.
