Since joining the NHS on a business support apprenticeship in 2017, John Booth has embraced various roles in IT, medical records, information governance and software development, and completed several apprenticeships delivered by private companies.
However, when the opportunity arose to pursue a Level 4 Digital and Technology Solutions (Cyber Security Analysis) at Blackpool & The Fylde College through the Lancashire & Cumbria Institute of Technology (L&C IoT), John saw it as a perfect opportunity to expand his expertise and further his career in a critical and rapidly evolving field at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Having been out of a traditional education setting for six years, John approached the programme with some uncertainty. He initially didn’t know what to expect, but the supportive environment of the IoT programme quickly dispelled his doubts.
John thrived in the setting, benefiting from a combination of tailored teaching methods, one-to-one support from tutors, and constructive feedback on his draft assignments. These tools not only helped him build confidence in areas like writing reports and technical documents but also made the learning experience enjoyable and effective.
One of the standout aspects of John’s apprenticeship was the hands-on experience he gained working with the NHS Back Office team. Here, he explored a range of critical cyber security functions, including:
The apprenticeship allowed John to directly apply his learning to real-world challenges, enhancing the NHS’s cyber infrastructure and preparing him for future demands in the field. The combination of his academic training and workplace experience was a perfect match for his interests and career goals.
John credits his growth to the opportunities provided by the NHS and the structured learning environment offered by the L&C IoT programme. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for the skills he’s developed and the confidence he’s gained.
He said: “I’m really enjoying what I’ve done so far and can’t wait to see where this goes.” This enthusiasm underscores the transformative power of upskilling and continuous learning.
For John, the partnership between the NHS and the L&C IoT has offered a career-defining experience, equipping him with up-to-date skills in a fast-moving sector. For the NHS, it represents a strategic investment in building a workforce capable of addressing the ever-evolving challenges of cyber security.
John’s story is a testament to the value of workforce development. His journey highlights the importance of supportive learning environments, practical experience, and strong employer-education partnerships. By fostering opportunities for growth, the NHS and the L&C IoT are not only transforming individual careers but also strengthening the resilience and innovation of the healthcare sector
