MPs praised the ‘pipeline of talent ready to meet real-world challenges’ on a visit to IoT academic partner Accrington and Rossendale College.
The college, part of Nelson and Colne College Group (NCCG), welcomed Rossendale and Darwen MP Andy MacNae and Hyndburn MP Sarah Smith for a tour of its IoT facilities.
The IoT had invited the MPs to shine a light on its growing role in equipping students with cutting-edge skills aligned with the evolving needs of local industry.
The MPs were guided around the campus by Morag Davis, Group Executive Director of Strategy and Transformation, Charlotte Scheffmann, Dean of Higher Education, and Dr Steve Wright, Director of Academic Standards.
Their tour began with the IoT Sustainability Hub, a cornerstone of the college’s technical education offering. Here, they observed demonstrations of tensile testing and laser cutting machinery – state-of-the-art equipment provided through the IoT.
These facilities are central to the college’s commitment to delivering high-level technical education and were being actively used by Sustainable Technology HNC students during the visit. The MPs took time to speak directly with learners, hearing first-hand how these tools are enhancing their education and future career prospects.
From the Sustainability Hub, the group moved on to see the college’s new counselling pods provided by the IoT before moving onto the Informatics Lab. Here, they spoke with HNC students currently studying Electrical Engineering, gaining insight into the high-level academic and technical training being delivered. These conversations highlight the vital role that IoT facilities play not only in student learning but in ensuring that graduates are work-ready and able to meet the demands of modern industry.
Speaking after the visit, Andy MacNae praised the college’s efforts to align education with employer needs: “It’s incredibly encouraging to see how Accrington and Rossendale College and the IoT, is leading the way in delivering the skills our businesses are crying out for.
“This is about more than just education – it’s about creating a pipeline of talent that’s ready to meet real-world challenges. The partnership between the IoT and local business is ensuring students aren’t just gaining knowledge but acquiring the practical, work-ready skills that will allow them to thrive.”
