How Vodafone utilise the L&C IoT to stay ahead of the competition

Vodafone Students

Vodafone has partnered with the Lancashire and Cumbria Institute of Technology (L&C IoT) to recruit and develop leading talent to ensure they stay ahead of the competition.

The L&C IoT offers a wide range of courses in key sectors – including computing and digital – to nurture talent and drive innovation across the region.

The partnership between L&C IoT and Vodafone highlights the ability to deliver industry-ready students who are equipped with the skills and the mindset to excel in a competitive landscape.

Among the standout success stories are Philippa Austin and James Hollis, whose journeys illustrate the transformative power of IoT courses.

Philippa Austin’s contributions to Vodafone and beyond are nothing short of extraordinary. During the pandemic she created an app called Just Coffee, designed to help colleagues connect and meet new people. This app is now being used globally, spanning four continents.

Beyond her technical achievements, Philippa has become a prominent advocate for diversity in technology. She has presented at numerous Girls in STEM events, sharing her journey as a software engineer and apprentice with students across Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Her passion for outreach inspires a new generation to consider careers in digital innovation, embodying the ethos of L&C IoT in fostering inclusive and forward-thinking talent.

Philippa’s technical creativity shines in projects like her art-making site developed with Python and JavaScript, a fully functional plant shop created during her university studies, and an object-oriented vending machine – each a testament to the hands-on, practical approach of L&C IoT courses.

James Hollis’s story is equally inspiring, showcasing how dedication and expertise can lead to extraordinary achievements in a short time. Since joining Vodafone in March 2023, James has made a significant impact, breaking the company’s in-house record for the fastest code release to production. This highlights not only his technical proficiency but also the ability to deliver results under real-world pressures, a skillset cultivated during his IoT studies.

Specialising in front-end development with a focus on JavaScript and TypeScript using the React library, James has played a key role in enhancing Vodafone’s digital platforms. His work ensures that the company’s websites are not only functional but also user-friendly and visually appealing.

James’s dedication to continuous learning has been evident in his efforts to expand his skills beyond front-end technologies to full-stack development. This adaptability and commitment underscore the value of L&C IoT’s approach to fostering a growth mindset.

James’s achievements demonstrate how the IoT courses have prepared him for a demanding, fast-paced industry, delivering immediate value to Vodafone and setting an example for other apprentices.

Impact of partnerships

The contributions of other students further underline the impact to Vodafone of L&C IoT courses. Andrew Roberts earned the prestigious Apprentice of the Year award in his first year, while William Wood has described how the programme has helped him grow both professionally and personally since starting his degree apprenticeship in September 2023.

He credits L&C IoT’s carefully designed modules and tasks with rounding out his knowledge of the IT industry, enabling him to make meaningful contributions to Vodafone’s operations. Similarly, Elliot Fenwick and Tyler Checchia have benefited from the programme’s practical focus, equipping them with the skills to thrive in their roles.

The success of these students highlights the relationship between L&C IoT and Vodafone, where the courses have provided a strong foundation for technical expertise, and the company is able to offer a supportive environment for apprentices to apply their knowledge and grow.

The achievements of these students demonstrate the tangible benefits of investing in IoT education and exemplify how L&C IoT is shaping the future workforce.
