Meet demand for science innovation with the Skills Barometer 2025

The science sector is a vital driver of innovation, employment and economic growth in Lancashire and Cumbria – and it’s set for major expansion. With £238 million in projected research and development growth over the next decade, the region is fast becoming a hub for biopharmaceuticals, precision medicine and digital health.

But growth brings challenges. In our Skills Barometer 2025, Ian Beckett, Programme Leader in HE Science at Burnley College, highlighted ongoing issues with talent shortages, infrastructure barriers and a worrying gap in practical lab skills among graduates. Too often, young people leave education without the hands-on experience employers need, making it harder for businesses to grow and innovate.

The Skills Barometer 2025 captures the current state of the sector, highlights the skills employers want and predicts how these needs will evolve. Ian stressed that technical expertise must be matched by soft skills like communication, problem-solving and project management, skills the Lancashire and Cumbria IoT is embedding into its industry-led, hands-on training.

With employers, colleges and researchers working together, the region is well-placed to meet demand and unlock the potential of its science sector.
