The technology and the skilled staff make the IoT stand out for learner James Strickland.
The 19-year-old is on a Foundation Degree in Software Engineering (Games Development) at Blackpool and the Fylde College.
“The equipment at the IoT is next level – and there’s really good interaction with tutors,” he says. “It’s a really friendly environment and you might not get that if you went to a university.”
James studied further education qualifications at Blackpool’s Bispham site before moving onto the degree course at the college’s University Centre, where the IoT facilities include a virtual reality Igloo, Data Lab and interactive Cube.
The Igloo is an immersive space where users can display and engage with any type of digital content, like stepping into a giant VR headset.

Learners have access to the industry-leading equipment as much as they like, whether using it for their courses or for their own projects to further their learning.
James, who has one more year left on his course before moving into a software engineering role, said: “I’ve used the driving simulator and the telemetry from that goes straight into the Igloo so we can analyse the data and build projects around it, which is enormously helpful.
“Another highlight for me is how much we cover on this course – it’s really detailed and gives us really good experience. There’s so much we can do that we wouldn’t necessarily get to experience at a university.”
