“The software we use is industry-leading.”

Ermal, Level 4 Engineering HNC

Mechanical engineering student Ermal Sadiku enjoys the flexibility of his IoT course – and the real-world applications of his learning.

Ermal, who is studying a Level 4 HNC course at Nelson and Colne College, has the chance to use industry-leading computer-aided design (CAD) software as part of his work and is relishing the projects he has been involved with so far.

“My favourite so far has been when we split into groups and made hover boards – then went to test them out outside,” he says. “The software we use – like AutoDesk and Creo – is exactly what they use in industry, so the course is really preparing us for work.”

The Accrington student was attracted to mechanical engineering after leaving Mount Carmel RC High School, taking on a Level 2 BTEC in engineering with maths at Nelson, followed by a Level 3 BTEC in manufacturing and engineering.

His current course involves understanding the mathematical and scientific principles that underpin engineering, along with more practical projects. After completing his Level 4 HNC, Ermal has the option of moving on to the Level 5 HND or entering the world of work, and he particularly likes the flexibility this offers.

“I’ve started looking for jobs in industry but, if I don’t find anything suitable, I can stay on to do the Level 5 HND, and then maybe the Level 6, which is bachelors degree level,” he says. “I like that you come out with a qualification for every year and then you can look at your options, rather than having to commit to a three-year degree course.”

Ermal praised the quality of teaching from his tutors, who have industry experience in the subjects they’re teaching. He added: “If people are interested in engineering, I’d definitely recommend this IoT course.”
